Social Activists Call For Ban On Church Wine
Buckfast Abbey in Devon is world famous for it’s wine production. The brew was first produced in 1890s by the Benedictine monks at at the Abbey using a recipe brought to the UK from France, as indeed is the wine base used today.
The wine was originally sold in small quantities by the Abbey itself, as a medicine with the slogan “Three small glasses a day, for good health and lively blood”.
The Abbey lost its licence to sell in 1927 and a wine merchant was used to distribute the product.
But now the fortified broth is being blamed for spiralling anti-social behavoiur in an area not necessarily associated with fine wines. Buckfast – or Buckie as it is known in parts of Scorland – was linked to 5000 crimes in Scotland’s largest police force area in the last three years.
And almost one in 10 of those crimes in Strathclyde was violent, figures obtained under freedom of information laws show.
Researchers said the number of times Buckfast was associated with violence was shocking, as sales account for under half a per cent of the Scots drinks market.
The revelations are made in a BBC documentary to be shown tonight ( 18th January 2010) . It also looks at ingredients in the tonic wine and how they may affect behaviour.
Neuroscientist Dr Steven Alexander calculated there are 281mg of caffeine in a bottle of Buckfast – as much as in eight cans of cola.
Some drinkers get through two bottles of Buckfast a day.
Dr Alexander said: “It’s going to have the person bouncing around all over the place.”
The monks of Buckfast Abbey and their distribution partners strenuously deny that their product is particularly harmful, saying that it is responsibly and legally enjoyed by the great majority of purchasers. They also point out that the areas identified with its acute misuse have been economically deprived for decades.

Feds Foto Fit-Up Removed

Osama ( left) as he would look today
Embarrassed FBI officials have been forced to withdraw a photo-fit of wanted terrorist Osama Bin Laden , after it was discovered they had used a Spanish MPs face. The ‘Most Wanted’ picture was to show how the Terror Chief might look today , without his trademark beard and turban.
Fitting up a well known politico , albeit a European one , seems like shooting oneself in the foot , especially if you wish to convince a sceptical world population that the 911 mastermind is still alive , kicking and planning more atrocities. And what is the purpose of reintroducing the name – and photofit- of Osama Bin Laden back into the headlines?

Proposed government infiltration of Conspiracy groups
Cass Sunstein is President Obama’s Harvard Law School friend, and recently appointed Administrator of the White House Office of Information and Regulatory Affairs.
In a recent scholarly article, he and coauthor Adrian Vermeule take up the question of “Conspiracy Theories: Causes and Cures.” (J. Political Philosophy, 7 (2009), 202-227). This is a man with the president’s ear. This is a man who would process information and regulate things. What does he here propose?
[W]e suggest a distinctive tactic for breaking up the hard core of extremists who supply conspiracy theories: cognitive infiltration of extremist groups, whereby government agents or their allies (acting either virtually or in real space, and either openly or anonymously) will undermine the crippled epistemology of believers by planting doubts about the theories and stylized facts that circulate within such groups, thereby introducing beneficial cognitive diversity. (Page 219.)
Read this paragraph again. Unpack it. Work your way through the language and the intent. Imagine the application. What do we learn?
- It is “extremists” who “supply” “conspiracy theories.”
- Their “hard core” must be “broken up” with distinctive tactics. What tactics?
- “Infiltration” (“cognitive”) of groups with questions about official explanations or obfuscations or lies. Who is to infiltrate?
- “Government agents or their allies,” virtually (i.e. on-line) or in “real-space” (as at meetings), and “either openly or anonymously,” though “infiltration” would imply the latter. What will these agents do?
- Undermine “crippled epistemology” — one’s theory and technique of knowledge. How will they do this?
- By “planting doubts” which will “circulate.” Will these doubts be beneficial?
- Certainly. Because they will introduce “cognitive diversity.”
Put into English, what Sunstein is proposing is government infiltration of groups opposing prevailing policy. Palestinian Liberation? 9/11 Truth? Anti-nuclear power? Stop the wars? End the Fed? Support Nader? Eat the Rich?
Shopping Too Dangerous For Top Policeman
For reasons of personal safety , a top South Wales copper has admitted to ditching his habit of walking around a supermarket , reminiscent of former Labour Deputy Prime Minister Harriett Harman’s faux pas when spotted walking around her constituency in a stab-proof vest.
Chief Constable of South Wales , Peter Vaughan , in an interview with respected journal ‘Jane’s Police Review’ stated:
“I used to be able to walk around my local supermarket but now someone else will do my shopping for security reasons.”
Perhaps he should ask a pensioner to do it for him. Meanwhile the rest of us have to brave the real world. It’s not all bad news though , as the top man of South Wales’ finest ( if not bravest) states that he missed doing his own shopping.
“It sounds strange, but I liked going for a walk and taking a breather.”

12 Privacy Trends to Watch in 2010
The Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF) is an organization that was created in 1990 to fight for cyber-rights, and defend our electronic civil liberties. As the Internet and the multitude of devices connected to it proliferate our daily lives, privacy is fast becoming nothing more than a quaint idea from the last century.
Now practically every facet of our lives are in some way covertly recorded, or in some cases overtly by us in the use of services like You Tube, Twitter, Facebook etc.
The EFF has laid out a list of 12 privacy trends to look out for this year, as governments and corporations continue to curtail freedom, liberty and self determination.

Judge Delays UFO Enthusiast McKinnon Extradition

UFO Enthusiast
A UK Judge has ordered another judicial review into whether Gary McKinnon should be extradited to the USA to stand trial for hacking into the Pentagon in what turned out to be a successful search for evidence of UFOs. The High Court will rule whether Alan Johnson , the former Marxist and current UK Home Secretary , was correct not to intervene in the US request to try McKinnon under the flag of the USA , knowing that the accused suffers from Asperger’s Syndrome.
With an Election on the horizon and Johnson likely to lose his job and disappear into the back benches ( or into the House of Lords) , it will be interesting to see if the new Government feel able to block further attempts by the US Government or whether , as their current position intimates , they simply change the law so that such high profile and embarrassing cases no longer reach the public eye.

Body scanners can store, send images
Not only do I love this story, but I cant wait for the Flickr page…
A privacy group says the Transportation Security Administration is misleading the public with claims that full-body scanners at airports cannot store or send their graphic images.
The TSA specified in 2008 documents that the machines must have image storage and sending abilities, the Washington-based Electronic Privacy Information Center (EPIC) said.
In the documents, obtained by the privacy group and provided to CNN, the TSA specifies that the body scanners it purchases must have the ability to store and send images when in “test mode.”

Swine flu ‘a false pandemic’ to sell vaccines
The Swine Flu has been a topic that has been constantly discussed on this site and The Mind Set podcast, simply because of the way the media has portrayed this minor outbreak as a “pandemic”.
Wolfgang Wodarg, head of health at the Council of Europe, claimed major firms organized a “campaign of panic” to put pressure on the World Health Organization (WHO) to declare a pandemic. He believes it is, “one of the greatest medicine scandals of the century”, and has called for an inquiry.
An inquiry that will either be a complete whitewash, or never see the light of day. Once again fear has been used to herd the sheep, only this time (at least on the surface) money and profit seems to be the motivating force behind this latest attempt to hoodwink the public.
