The decision to drop plans to return astronauts to the Moon has opened the door for China , Russia and India to take the initiative in establishing a permanent base on Earth's close neighbour- and all the military strategic advantages that such a base would deliver.
The Obama proposal “begins the death march for the future of U.S. human space flight,” Senator Richard Shelby, the senior Republican on the subcommittee that determines NASA’s budget, said in a statement. If the budget is enacted, NASA “will be the agency of pipe dreams and fairy tales,” he continued.
Possibly there may be other considerations as to why the USA has abandoned its once most pressing space initiative. Whether the reason is simply financial - doubtful as the USA administration continues to pour billions of dollars down a military drain - or by other more non-earthly reasons , only time will tell.

Space.com is reporting that President Obama is abandoning NASA's plan to revisit the Moon. The directive that was put forward by President Bush in 2004, and put man back on the moon has been been placed on hold, in favor of focusing on the International Space Station.
CAPE CANAVERAL — President Barack Obama will ask Congress to extend International Space Station operations through at least 2020 but abandon NASA's current plans to return U.S. astronauts to the moon, administration and NASA officials said Wednesday.
NASA since 2004 has invested $9 billion in developing the Constellation program's Ares I and Ares V rockets and the Apollo-style Orion crew capsule for missions to the moon, Mars and, in the event no commercial means becomes available, the International Space Station.
This all seems a little weird to me considering the apparent world space race that is in full swing. Hell, even Richard Branson is getting into orbit! 9 billion already spent on the missions, only to be scrapped? And why the focus on the Space Station? Interestingly enough, has anyone given any thought as to what they are doing on up there?
Far too many questions, but one think as always stuck with me. Why did we stop going to the moon in the mid 1970's? Its as if the Moon is currently off limits, and if so why?
Apollo 11 astronaut Neil Armstrong, who rarely gives interviews and stays firmly out of the public eye, let slip these gems upon returning from the Moon:
Professor: What REALLY happened out there with Apollo 11?
Armstrong: It was incredible, of course we had always known there was a possibility, the fact is, we were warned off! (by the aliens) There was never any question then of a space station or a moon city.
Armstrong: I can't go into details, except to say that their ships were far superior
to ours both in size and technology - Boy, were they big!...and menacing! No, there is no question of a space station.
Professor: How do you mean "warned off"?
Curiouser and curiouser...

Extraterrestrials probably walk , talk and behave just like Earthlings , according to a Conference on alien life.
"In the end the number of options is remarkably restrictive. I don't think an alien will be a blob. If aliens are out there they should have evolved just like us. They should have eyes and be walking on two legs. " stated Professor Simon Conway Morris of Cambridge University. "It is about time they turned up," he said. "It is very, very quiet out there. Suspiciously quiet. Where on Earth are they?"

A UK Judge has ordered another judicial review into whether Gary McKinnon should be extradited to the USA to stand trial for hacking into the Pentagon in what turned out to be a successful search for evidence of UFOs. The High Court will rule whether Alan Johnson , the former Marxist and current UK Home Secretary , was correct not to intervene in the US request to try McKinnon under the flag of the USA , knowing that the accused suffers from Asperger's Syndrome.
With an Election on the horizon and Johnson likely to lose his job and disappear into the back benches ( or into the House of Lords) , it will be interesting to see if the new Government feel able to block further attempts by the US Government or whether , as their current position intimates , they simply change the law so that such high profile and embarrassing cases no longer reach the public eye.

The planet Mars has always held an unusually strong fascination for humanity, and thoughts concerning life and Martians have rattled around mankind's consciousness since, well... forever?
If there is life on Mars, why cover it up?
Are we talking microbes or walking and talking Martians? From where I'm standing it could go either way, as it really does look like NASA is holding back some evidence. And that evidence could be anything from ancient Martian ruins to current microbial life.
'Some pesky scientists have just pointed out an appalling design error in NASA’s latest attempts to find life on Mars. This is beginning to look like a conspiracy. Does someone not want us to find life on Mars? NASA has tried looking for signs of life on Mars precisely once, in the 1976 Viking mission.
The result was positive. The reason nobody says there is life on Mars is that another experiment, part of the same mission, couldn’t find any carbon-based “organic” chemicals in Martian soil. This, NASA decided, overruled the other result: with no carbon present, there could be no microbes living on or under the surface of Mars.
