UK Defence : Saving or Sell Out
“Rejoice , rejoice…”, so said PM Margaret Thatcher as UK forces accepted the surrender of the enemy in that very British War, the Falklands Conflict. She also said ” We are a grandmother…” but we should possibly put that down to the heat of the moment rather royal aspirations.
25 percent cuts in military spending have now been earmarked by the Government as every aspect of British life comes under the shadow of the fiscal axe. But is this a sell out rather than a spending cut exercise? The percentage suggests it is the former rather than the latter.
Whilst reassuring the media outlets that front line troops will not be under-staffed, under-equipped and under-funded following this review, a lot of the infrastructure will be dismantled, thereby destroying the capacity to deliver an effective service in the future.
De-skilling huge sectors will ensure that once gone, lost abilities will not be coming back. Unless imported from overseas. And that’s my point. A vacuum will exist – and will be filled as it always is – and it is seen in some quarters as passing the independent deterrent from our hands to another country – or body. Recent history may suggest we already have, and this is simply the final piece of the pie.
Interestingly GCHQ will not be subject to any review as, according to a spokesman, this is essential to the security of the nation.
