Some tidbits of juicy useless information yet a good example of how one with a conspiratorial Mind Set can see other perspectives to certain stories. There probably is no plot behind the scratched out word Jefferson changed on a newly reexamined draft of the Declaration of Independence.
Hyperspectral images of a draft of the Declaration of Independence reveal that it originally used the word ‘subjects’ instead of ‘citizens’ at a critical juncture. After writing “our fellow subjects,” author Thomas Jefferson scrubbed it out and replaced it with the familiar alternative.
One could fit that piece of information in with several ways of looking at it. The most obvious explanation and the one being given by researchers is that Jefferson’s correction showed how the colonists were changing from subjects of the British to citizens of a new country.
To the Library of Congress, whose Preservation Research and Testing Division analyzed the document with the latest high-resolution camera equipment, it illustrates an important moment: “when [Jefferson] reconsidered his choice of words and articulated the recognition that the people of the fledgling United States of America were no longer subjects of any nation, but citizens of an emerging democracy.”
Other meanings of the corrected word could lead to ideas of Hamilton and his idea of a monarchy rule of system much like Britain’s, which not too many people seem to recall or were never taught. Many colonists of the time believed the British system was the best in the world and for reasons we will never truly know the Founding Fathers(tm) ended up going with Jefferson’s republic system of control. From this viewpoint one could contemplate the change from subjects to citizens to mean the change in the system of government they were deciding on going with. Another possible view is Jefferson foresaw the change of state in the country that he was establishing for its citizens to one day be subjects to a corrupt and cruel government. Or maybe he just plain messed up, could have been a long night, Benjamin might have been pestering him who knows right?
The Fourth of July in the United States is a holiday meant to celebrate independence and perpetuate all the magic of my American history we learned in
government regulated school. I will have fun at the cookouts and fireworks but I, unlike many Americans will hold no illusions to the “importance” of the day. The America of today and it’s form of justice along with the overtaken corporate/ intelligence run government do not resemble anything in the beauty of the history and ideals behind the Declaration of Independence and Bill of Rights.
Citizens in the US enjoy your 4th and stay safe! Everyone else around the world have a good 4th as well since it really is just another day on the calendar.
