First UK Arrest By Military Drone

February 12th, 2010

Suddenly Drones (UAVs) are in the news everywhere. Pakistan, Afghanistan, Iraq... and Merseyside.  U.K. Police made their first Drone assisted arrest, tracking down a suspected car thief using thermal imaging technology to track one of the suspects.  Chief Inspector Nick Gunatilleke from the Force's Anti-social Behaviour Taskforce, which operates the UAV, said:

“We are the only police force in the country currently using a UAV like this and this is the first time the thermal imaging equipment has led directly to an arrest since the UAV went live in November so we are very pleased."

BAE, who recently escaped bribery charges , is racing to corner the Drones market in the UK. Meanwhile, a 20 year old and 16 year old youth were released on police bail pending further enquiries following the incident on 26th January 2010.
