You would think that Governments would be crowing with delight as the second wave of Swine Flu ebbs away. However Scottish Parliament Health Minister Nicola Sturgeon today has warned of a third wave in the New Year. The threat of a flu pandemic has hung over the world for over a decade , starting in 1997 when avian flu was discovered in Hong Kong.

The planners in the NHS have now been ordered to keep one eye on the possibility of a third wave at some point over the winter or into the spring.”The Health Secretary stated that “significant numbers of people” had now been vaccinated against the H1N1 infection and this would help slow down the spread of the virus. For real.

However she insisted: “We do have to remain vigilant and historically flu pandemics have come in three waves, so we have had two, we may well get a third in the early part of the year, we don’t know. But what we do know is the more people we get vaccinated in the intervening period, the less of an impact any third wave will have.”
